vol 1: Perceiving the direction of play

Kobayashi Satoru 9 dan

Whole board problems from opening, joseki and middlegame with as theme the direction of play.

In this book from Hinoki Press, Kobayashi Satoru, one of the top current Japanese pros, uses his own games to show how to determine the correct direction of play, that is, the proper direction to develop or the proper area to play in. This is particularly important in the opening and early middle game, and a good sense of direction is essential for becoming a strong player. One interesting section of the book shows how the go masters before Honinbo Dosaku were poor in judging direction of play, though they were highly skilled in fighting.
