Kilauea is an original and strategic board game from HABA for 2 to 4 players ages 10 and up. In this tactical game, players take on the role of a Mo'o, a mythical lizard spirit from Hawaiian folklore. By collecting, building, and cleverly placing tikis, you aim to bring the most honor to Pele, the goddess of volcanoes.
With simple rules, a sophisticated scoring system, and constantly changing gameplay, Kilauea offers a fun challenge for families and experienced players who love strategy and forward thinking.
A strategic tiki game set around an active volcano
In Kilauea, it’s all about building impressive tiki columns and making the most of the different volcanic zones. On each turn, you move your token around the volcano using a rondel mechanism. Depending on your position, you then choose one of the available actions.
Chopping down tikis in the forest
Building tikis in the volcanic area
Placing tikis on your personal island
Although the actions are simple, the game constantly requires smart choices. The value of each color of tiki changes throughout the game, making timing and planning crucial.
Smart Scoring and Tactical Planning
When the first and third forests have been completely cleared, scoring takes place. In each volcanic zone, the tiki columns are evaluated. The highest column earns points per component, while the remaining columns can yield even more value.
These points are then multiplied by the number of same-colored tikis you’ve collected on the corresponding section of your personal island. This creates an interesting interplay between what happens on the central game board and what you’re building yourself.
Your opponents will constantly try to maximize their own scores, all while potentially thwarting your plans. This keeps every game exciting right up to the final tally.
